SUVs ‘disarmed* last night in Toorek, Melbourne’s richest suburb
New group. The Tyre Extinquishers, aims to make it impossible to own an SUV in urban areas
SUVs are unnecessary “luxury emissions, flaunted by the wealthy, that are a climate disaster, cause air pollution and make our roads more dangerous
Concerned citizens deflated tyres on hundreds of SUVs in Melbourne’s richest suburb last night. in the first action in a new wave of climate protest in Australia
The Tyre Extinguishers is a new movement springing up across the globe, encouraging people to take action against urban SUVs
The Tyre Extinguishers are a leaderless group where citizens take action in their local area by using a website to learn how to deflate the tyres and to print off a letter to leave at the SUV to inform the owner of what has happened. for their safety.
The group is taking this action because:
SUVs are a climate disaster: If SUV drivers were a country, they would be the sixth largest polluting country in the world.
Researchers were shocked in 2019 to find that SUVs are the second-largest cause of the global rise in carbon dioxide emissions over the last decade. The IEA says the surge in SUV sales is cancelling out all the carbon savings from people switching to electric cars
SUVs cause air pollution: Larger cars belch out more toxic fumes, worsening air pollution in our town and cities. Scientists incressingly link air pollution to a whole range of health problems, from hert attacks, strokes, cancer, lung problems, miscarrisges, even mental health problems
In addition, air pollution is racist: people of colour live in areas more likely to be exposed to toxic air. SUV drivers tend to be richer, and therefore tend to be white
SUVs are dangerous: SUVs are much more likely to kill compared to normal cars when striking pedestrians. Psychological studies have shown suv drivers take more risks, putting other road users and pedestrians in danger. Even suv drivers and passengers are more likely to die in accidents. Increasing road injuries in Victoria have been linked to increased SUV ownership
SUVs are unnecessary: Three quarters of these off-road vehicles are sold to people living in towns and cities. They exist purely for the vanity of their owners. who see them as a status symbol. For the sake of this vanity and consoicuous consumotion. climate change is made worse, we breathe in polluted air and more people ole in accidents, This is unacceotable.
The Tyre Extinguishers want to see bans on SUVs in urban areas, pollution levies to tax SUVs out of existence, and massive investment in free comprehensive public transoort. But until politicians make this a reglity, Tyre Extinguishers action will continue
